‘How to Hempcrete’ course
Interested in learning about the wonders of hempcrete? Join us for this hands-on workshop where you'll gain the skills and know-how of installing hempcrete in a new-build scenario.
The course will be split into two sessions; a morning presentation that will cover all technical aspects of building with hempcrete and what makes it such a brilliant, sustainable building material. Jasper and Ronan, our course leaders, will then spend the afternoon guiding you through a live build.
This workshop is completely interactive and course participants will try their hands at every stage of the build including measuring and cutting timber, using power tools, mixing and placing hempcrete and more. Combined with expert-led discussions, this course provides the tools needed to build with hempcrete with confidence.
What you’ll learn:
- technical information about hempcrete as a building material
- hempcrete in new-build scenario: the key details
- methods of using hempcrete elsewhere and in conjunction with other natural materials
- practical experience of mixing and placing hempcrete to create a section of new-build wall

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have building experience?
No relevant skill or experience is necessary. Our course leaders will guide you through the build and will be available for support and demonstrations throughout.
Is there parking?
Yes, there is ample parking on site, though please consider lift sharing if attending the course with friends or colleagues.
Can I reach the course via public transport?
There is no designated train or bus stop near site, though the S4 bus route does pass on the main road where the turning is located. Porthmadog is the closest town (6.8m) and Beddgelert is one of the closest villages (2.2m) - both easily reached by bus and Porthmadog by train.
What facilities are on site?
There are composting loos on site and taps for drinking water. Please bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day.
What should I wear?
Hempcrete is messy - don't dress to impress! Although this event will mostly be held undercover, we'd suggest wearing waterproof clothing to protect your skin from potential burns (lime is a corrosive substance). We will provide everyone with the relevant PPE like gloves, masks and goggles.
Is lunch included?
Yes! Our friends at Enaid Kitchen, who pride themselves on sourcing local and organic produce, will be laying out a feast for us to enjoy. Vegetarian options will be available, but please get in touch if you have further dietary requirements that we should consider. Please bring your own snacks.
Is the course wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately, no. Although wheelchair users may be able to take part in aspects of the build itself, the site location is on a farm where there is uneven terrain throughout.
Are there accommodation options?
Yes! The course will be held within a biodiversity farm in rural Snowdonia, where there is availability to camp for £15 a night (per person) or in the gorgeous on-site Shepherdess Hut (sleeps 2) for £110 a night, 2 night minimum stay. For more accommodation options, search for availability in nearby villages such as Nantmor, Beddgelert, Llanfrothen, Prenteg and Penrhyndeudraeth.
Are there any upfront costs?
We ask that a 20% deposit is paid upon booking to secure your place on the course, and the remainder fee be paid at least 3 weeks before the course date.
